Dear Parents and Carers
Welcome back to a new school year. We extend a warm welcome to all the children and families who are joining us for the first time and to our two new teachers Miss Phoebe Gardner in Year 5 and Miss Katy Wise in Years 3/4. The children have all settled into their new classes and there is a lovely atmosphere around school this week.
We would like to invite parents to see their child’s new classroom over the next couple of weeks:
- Thursday 12th September at 3pm Years 1 to 5
- Wednesday 18th September 3pm Year 6
- Thursday 19th September 3pm Reception
- Thursday 26th September 8.30am to 9.00am and 12.00pm to 12.30pm Nursery Stay and Play
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 may receive a free school meal. The cost of meals for children in Years 3 to 6 and Nursery is £2.20 per day.
We will continue to offer a packed lunch option on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for September for children in Key Stage 2 although children will not be picnic lunching very much now the weather has turned cooler. Jacket potatoes are also an option on these four days throughout the year for all year groups.
We run a weekly Tuck Shop on a Friday. We do not take cash at the Tuck Shop. Parent may purchase a Tuck Shop card for £5 and we will let you know when it is running low. Items at the Tuck Shop cost between 20p and 50p.
In the interest of keeping staff and children with nut allergies safe we respectfully request that parents do not send food containing nuts to school. I appreciate that many food products state a disclaimer about containing traces of nuts and most of the time these cannot be avoided. However, we would ask that you do not provide your child with things that contain nuts directly like peanut butter, peanuts, hazelnuts etc. Thank you for your understanding.
We are always looking for parents to help with Tuck Shop and to help the administration of our Reading Challenge. If you are interested please call at the school office for a volunteer pack, we would love to hear from you. We would particularly like to increase our volunteer workforce for the school library this year and if you would like to know more about what is involved with this please speak to Mrs Tinsley who teaches in Maple Class or send me an email which I can pass onto her.
Each team uses the Class Dojo to share life at school with parents. We ask that parents do not use this as a method of communication for something urgent as it is not monitored by teachers regularly enough for important messages to be addressed. If you need to communicate with school quickly then please either see the teacher at the door or pass a message on via the school office.
Miss Cuthbertson will be taking her maternity leave at the end of the month and Mrs Bishop will be taking over her role.
Parents and families are invited to the following class assemblies in the hall at 2.30pm on Fridays:
September 20th Year 6 (all about Kilvrough)
October 25th Maple Class
November 22nd Elder Class
November 29th Pine Class
There were many comments about home learning in our end of year questionnaire which we have taken on board. There was a strong feeling amongst parents that children receive too much homework so we have reviewed this and reduced it. All children will be expected to read daily (or share a book with an adult if they are pre-readers) and there are challenges connected to the Reading Challenge this year which children must complete before they receive their certificate. Reception children will receive a weekly sheet of discussion points. Children in Years 1 to 6 will be expected to carry out a spelling activity and attempt Times Tables Rock Stars at least twice a week. We will be putting the children into Rock Bands over the coming weeks and there will be an inter school challenge connected to the Times Tables Rock Stars.
Children in Year 4 will have to sit a national multiplication test from next year and times tables are an important part of maths. We would like to encourage children to learn these and know them off by heart.
We have a vacancy for a Lunchtime Supervisor and details of this can be found on our website.
We also have a vacancy for a Parent Governor. Nomination Forms and information about being a governor is attached today but please do come and chat to either me or one of our parent governors if you are interested in this role.
