Our Current Value is: Responsibility
Dear Parents and Carers
What a wonderful evening we spent in school last night with our first ever Summer Music Concert. The choir were joined by some Key Stage 1 children and musicians across the school and entertained the audience superbly. We had singers, announcers, piano players, recorder players and a drummer. We have a great range of talent at Madley Brook and it was a perfect opportunity to show case this. Thank you to all the staff involved in preparing for the concert and in particular Mrs McPherson and Miss Fillary who initiated the idea and gave time to rehearsing the children.
We were externally moderated this week for our Year 6 teacher assessments for writing. I am pleased to say that the moderator agreed with all the teacher judgements and commented on how well organised Mrs Robinson and Miss Jenkins were and how well they knew their children. Thank you to them both and to Mr McPherson who has supported writing in Year 6 this year too.
Year 1 Phonics
Our Year 1 children have undergone a national phonics test and I am pleased to say that 93% of our children have reached the expected standard. This is the second year that we have been teaching phonics through Read Write Inc and the second year that our phonics mark has been exceptionally high. The scheme is working and I would like to thank all the staff for their dedication towards the teaching of phonics and to all parents who support at home as this makes a big difference to the children’s attainment.
I have republished next year’s term dates once again this week as River Learning Trust schools are going to be involved in a National Teacher Learning Day on Friday 3rd July 2020 and this will be classified as an additional Inset Day. Dates will be on our school calendar today.
M and M Productions
On Wednesday 10th July M and M productions will perform their play Charlotte’s Web children in Reception to Year 6. We are asking parents for a contribution towards this play as it is a cost the school is not able to sustain but the quality of the theatre group is excellent and children really benefit from the experience. A couple of years ago we reached a point where the school was not able to fund this experience and I consulted parents about its future. There was an overwhelming response that suggested we split the cost between the parent contributions and the PTA. If you are able to contribute, please send your donation to school next week. The PTA will also be subsidising the cost. Thank you in anticipation.
Next Tuesday will be Mrs McPherson’s last day before she leaves to prepare for the birth of her second baby. We wish her all the very best and look forward to hearing her news. Mrs Tinsley will be teaching the class full time until Mrs McPherson returns next year.
Teaching Staff Deployment
I am pleased to say that last week we interviewed and appointed a new teacher for Upper Key Stage 2. Miss Phoebe Gardner joins us as a newly qualified teacher and will be in school next week to meet her new class.
At this moment in time we are still trying to recruit another teacher to teach in Lower Key Stage in Willow Class. I am really hoping that we will be able to appoint before Wednesday’s transition day. I know this is very unsettling for the children this affects but these are circumstances beyond our control and we are doing our best to speed this process up. If we are unable to recruit in time for induction on Wednesday, then once a teacher is appointed we will arrange for that teacher to spend time with the class before the end of term. Classes for September are:
Nursery: Mrs Ellis
Reception: Mrs Harris
Birch: Ms Evans (Team Leader)
Maple: Mrs Tinsley
Beech: Miss Watton
Oak: Miss Edwards
Elder: Mrs Wakeling and Miss Cuthbertson (Team Leaders)
Lime: Miss Fillary
Pine: Mrs Robinson (Team Leader)
Elm: Miss Gardner
Key Stage 1 and 2 classes are made up as follows:
Birch: Years 1 and 2
Maple: Year 2
Beech: Year 1
Oak: Year 3
Willow: Years 3 and 4
Elder: Year 4
Lime: Years 5 and 6
Pine: Year 6
Elm: Year 5
Miss Cuthbertson plans to start her maternity leave at the beginning of October and we are in the process now of recruiting for her position.
